Samenvatting

Een opstelling die kleurgekalibreerd is met een overwegend witte ach-tergrond, kan clipping veroorzaken in de donkerste partijen van een op-name. Voornamelijk als het op te nemen object donker is en relatief grootvan formaat. Een dergelijk object obstrueert de invloed van de witte ach-tergrond, namelijk het verlichten van de donkere partijen. Het is mogelijkdat dit de opname zodanig verduistert dat er clipping optreed. Dit zal ineen dergelijk geval ook gebeuren als er op wit wordt gekalibreerd, en ver-volgens op zwart wordt opgenomen. Als de opstelling kleurgekalibreerd zou zijn met een zwarte achtergrond, zou het op te nemen object alleeneen invloed hebben op zichzelf. Dit omdat de zwarte achtergrond per de-nitie geen licht reecteert, en dus geen invloed heeft op het object. Depraktische aanbeveling is om targets op te nemen in een zo donker moge-lijke omgeving, gebruikmakend van targets met zo min mogelijk lichtop-brengst. De oorzaak van dit fenomeen is mogelijk overstraling, dit is nietonderzocht.

1 Introductie

Zwart is altijd de mode bij de uitvoering van fotograe, zowel in de behuizingvan de apparatuur als de kleding van de fotograaf. De kleur zwart neemt ineen ideaal geval alleen licht op, wat betekent dat het geen invloed heeft op hetresultaat van de opname. De aanwezigheid van lichtere kleuren buiten het re-levante object, zal invloed hebben op het resultaat van de opname. Dit is nietper denitie een probleem, omdat daarvoor gecompenseerd kan worden1.De problemen dagen zich in de praktijk op als een object, zoals een relatief groteen donkere prent in een fotograsche opstelling word gelegd die een lichte on-dergrond heeft (en is gekalibreerd op deze lichte ondergrond). Dit betekent datdoor introductie van dit donkere object de lichte achtergrondinvloed vermin-derd. Dit leidt ertoe dat de belichting vermindert, waardoor in theorie clippingin het zwart zou kunnen ontstaan. Deze praktijksituatie is de aanleiding van dit1Zoals de belichtingswaarde (EV) van de camera verlagen, of de verlichting bij te stellen.1korte onderzoek waarin we de invloeden van een zwarte en witte achtergronddocumenteren.

2 Opstelling en targets

Als testopstelling voor dit onderzoek gebruiken we een vertikaal georienteerdecamera, gericht op een opnamevlak ter grootte van een A0. De camera staatingesteld om A3 formaat op te nemen op 300 dpi. Als test-targets worden deKodak Greyscale (Q13) en de X-rite ColorChecker SG gebruikt. Het totale op-pervlak zal bedekt worden met mat wit karton, waarna een mat zwart kartonneergelegd wordt ter referentie. De camera is gekalibreerd op de witte achter-grond.

3 Kodak Gray Scale (Q13)

De Kodak Gray Scale zal eerst subjectief bekeken worden, alvorens we mogelijkeen conclusie kunnen trekken na het doormeten van de waarden

.3.1 Optische vergelijking

In guur 1 zijn twee uitsneden van een grijstrap van de Q13 te zien, met eenrespectievelijk zwarte achtergrond en een witte ondergrond. Beide opnamen zijngemaakt in dezelfde opstelling met dezelfde instellingen, en gekalibreerd zodatde Q13 met de witte achtergrond voldoet aan de normwaarden2. Afhankelijkvan het medium waarop het onderstaande guur bekeken wordt, is te zien datbij de Q13 die is opgenomen met de zwarte achtergrond, de donkere tintendonkerder zijn geworden, terwijl de lichte tinten hetzelfde lijken te zijn. Hetovergangsgebied waar een waarneembaar verschil is in de twee situaties lijkt inde midden-grijs tinten te liggen.Figuur 1: Een Q13 met een zwarte achtergrond (boven) en een witte (onder)

3.2 Gemeten vergelijking

De twee testbeelden zijn omgezet naar L*ab in Photoshop. Vervolgens zijn degemiddelden genomen van de waarden binnen de patches. Deze zijn met behulpvan Matlab weergegeven in guur 2.De absolute verschillen in het resultaat uit guur 2 is geillustreerd in -guur 3. In dit guur is tevens de grenswaarde van 2 L* weergegeven, zoals bijMetamorfoze wordt gehanteerd[1].2Zoals deze worden gegeven door Kodak, tevens vermeld in de richtlijnen van BureauMetamorfoze2Figuur 2: Absolute waarden in L* van de twee opnamen van een Q13Figuur 3: Verschil in L* van de twee opnamen van de patches in een Q13In de eerste (lichtste) patches van de Q13 is geen waarneembaar verschilin densiteit. Vanaf ongeveer de negende tot de donkerste patch is het verschiltoenemend signicanter. Het verschil is vanaf de tiende patch zelfs zo signi-cant, dat het verschil in L* zelfs boven de eerder genoemde norm met waarde 2uitkomt. De laatste en donkerste patch is in dit geval zelfs 8 L* donkerder.

4 X-Rite ColorChecker SG (SG)

Vanwege het formaat en de grote hoeveelheid patches op de SG slaan we desubjectieve optische vergelijking over. De SG wordt slechts doorgemeten metMatlab. Kennis van de indeling van de patches van de SG is verondersteld.3

4.1 Gemeten vergelijking

De methodiek van het opnemen en verwerken van deze vergelijking is hetzelfdeals die van de voorgaande Q13. Vervolgens worden de verschillen gemeten enweergeven in guren.In guur 4 is het verschil in L* weergeven. De resultaten komen overeen metdie van de Q13, de lichte tonen zijn nauwelijks veranderd, terwijl de donkerepatches allen een L* verschil hebben met een waarde van rond de 6. Signicanteverschillen zijn ook te zien in de gekleurde patches.Het verschil in componenten a en b is weergeven in guren 5 en 6. Hier zijnverschillen te zien uiteenlopend tot een waarde van 2.Figuur 4: Verschil in L* van de twee opnamen van de patches in een SG5 ConclusieEen witte achtergrond zorgt ervoor dat donkere tinten lichter worden, terwijlhet geen invloed heeft op de lichte tinten. Dit betekent dat als de witte achter-grond verdwijnt, hetzij door introductie van een nieuwe (donkere) achtergrondof anders een donker object, de belichting van het totaal vermindert. Het iswaarschijnlijk dat dit komt door overstraling, maar dit is niet onderzocht.De daling van de lichtintensiteit van de opname in de gebruikte opstelling zorgtvoor een daling van 8 L* in de donkerste partijen van de test target na in-troductie van de donkere ondergrond. De implicaties hiervan zijn geillustreerdin guur 7. In dit guur is een hypothetische target gevisualiseerd, met eenbelichtingswaarde van 0 tot 100. Deze target is zodanig gekalibreerd met eenwitte achtergrond. Als deze target vervolgens zou worden opgenomen met eenzwarte achtergrond, zal er clipping optreden in de donkerste 6%.

My desk at the Technical University in Delft

Okay so no, obviously I took my own laptop with me to the university like i always do. Why we have fixed computers (that get recycled every year) at all at the TU Delft is beyond me; they are slow, unreliable and inflexible. Though still it is fairly serious that this computer is actually standing there, untouched for the last 10 or so years. i mean.. a floppy.. is lieing still ON THE KEYBOARD!? (actually there is a reason why this is like this, has to do with a stubborn professor, but no-one dares to talk about it, i’m serious.)

The problem is, how do i show you my pictures? I can’t YET, but here is one sample YouTube video in 3D from this camera from me:

The battery lasts around 15 minutes, sadly. It is a NP-50 battery, which has 3.6V. Weirdly enough, NP-50 batterys are commonly 3.7V.. This is weird, but does not matter. The inner circuitery handles that, and plus, while discharging the voltage swings by more than just that 0.1V, so that’s nothing to worry about. I bought two extra battery’s so i have 3.

I was pleasantly surprised by the 3D quality on the 3D screen of my new 3D camera. More about this and many content due tomorrow.

So, how about watching products: we all know the roundshots from objects. The future then is, that we want to see 3D roundshots. Sadly, there is no easy browser-software for this (yet), but we do have the great YouTube implementation. So what you can do, is make a 360 roundshot into a short movie, a 3D movie, that rotates 360′, hence, 3D-360. “Why not just record a rotating object with a 3D video camera?” = because that is just too easy; and eventually we want to use the 3D-360 images to implement in a 3D-360 browserwindow when the time is right (~3 years?).
Let’s put this idea to the test. Project time: 1 hour.

This will be some kind of “How to make a product or object 3D 360 video”.

3D-360 Test Setup

The nice thing about a roundshot is that you change the angle. So we do not need two camera’s; instead we take “x” images, and the frames for the lefteye are then “1 to x-1″ and those for the right “2 to x”. Or: in the first 3D image we use f.e. the 10deg angle and 20deg angle pictures, and in the second 3d image we use the 20deg and 30deg image; hence we re-use images, so we do not need 2 camera’s. Though, i had decided 10deg intervals would be OK for this test, i think 2~5deg would have been better, since it takes effort to see the 3D since the 10deg shift is quite big.

What we will do

1. Take 35 pictures (35x10degs=full circle)
2. Batch 35 pictures (Photoshop?) to square and without background
3. Make a movie (.avi) from pictures 1-to-34 for the left eye, and another movie from pictura 2-35 for the right eye.
4. Merge two movies together in the way youtube wants it.

Now I have used Photolapse (freeware & single .exe) to merge the two sequences into video files (.avi).

Then we import these two video files. We use StereoMovie maker (freeware, single .exe), actually Nasa uses this software for education.

Press Save Stereo (1) and reduce size (youtubes wants this format)

I ended up with these files. Now upload the right to youtube.

Now upload to YouTube, and add the tag “yt3d:enable=true” when uploading.

Then you should see this after uploading.

Now as you see from the image above, we can choose the method of 3D we want to see! Underneath here i have put the three most common 3D options next to eachother. And oh yeah, my video is 1080P, full HD ofcourse =)

When watching you can change the method of 3D you like!

Final Note

Sadly though, the 3D TV’s arent compatible YET with the Youtube3D (or YT3D). Not even all the PC 3D solutions with LCD’s and glasses are YT3D compatible yet, let alone 3D phones! But this is cutting edge: Sony announced that this summer it will incorporate the YT3D viewer in its 3D TV’s. I am convinced 3D is going to get very big, but we are not there yet. Youtube has made a nice step in the good direction!

2. Converts 3D coordinates to real-world coordinates
3. Makes a trigonial mesh
4. Fills in the entire trigonial mesh with the correct colors (from live image)
5. Starts from 1

Specs:

• ~2 seconds per frame (0.5 FPS)
• Accurate to ~5mm
• Works from 50cm to at least 700cm
• 0.3 MP Resolution
• If not set to realtime (=postprocessing) framerate would be 30FPS

Another 3D face reconstruction

Imagine a virtual world in your hands

Then, imaging looking at a static object in 3D, on a screen. Then, imagine the object in front of you, and move it by moving your hands through the air as if holding it (see my previous post for this method Sky touch 3D objects).

I tried to explain this graphically in this self-explanatory image, this solution would cost around €700, or, if you already have two projectors, if would cost around €150, or if you already have a 3D camera (as I have) it would cost ~€30, and if you already have polarization filters, it would cost ~€0.. Wait, I have all those things, so I will be physically testing this setup shortly:
